'Tree-mendous' Science in Year 1
In Year 1, we have started our unit on Plants - a Study of Trees.
Last week, we made a schema map of our prior knowledge of trees. This week, we asked the question: What makes a tree?
Our vision for Science is:
Be academic - Be curious - Be practical
First of all, were curious by looking at images and videos of various different types of trees from all around the world and generated insightful questions, as well as spotting features that make all trees similar.
We were academic whilst we learned the names of the different parts that make a tree: roots, trunk, bark and the crown, made of branches, leaves and twigs.
We then put our new knowledge into practical action by going outside and spotting the parts of a tree in our own playground. Later, we made models of trees by assembling the parts in the correct places and labelled accurately.
Next week, we will be learning more about the species of tree that live in our local area and then onto deciduous and evergreen.
