Scientific Surgeons!
Year 6 stepped into the world of surgery learning about the heart!
In Year 6, we have been learning about the human body and the circulatory system. We started our topic by looking at blood and nutrients. We have moved onto the components of the circulatory system and how our blood is firstly pumped to the lungs to receive the oxygen and get rid of the waste carbon dioxide. It then returns to the heart before it is pumped around the body to our capillaries where another transfer takes places. The blood gives the cells oxygen and takes away more waste carbon dioxide. You will see this in some of our work examples.
We then looked at what our heart was like on the inside and how it works. You can see this in the pictures where we are dissecting a pig's heart (donated kindly by a parent, who is a butcher.) The pig's heart is very similar to the of a human as we found out in our literacy linked book 'Pig Heart Boy' by Malorie Blackman. We have explored the different chambers of the heart and tested our recall of this with the diagram where we added labels.
We achieved this all through our school's science vision:
Be academic. Be curious. Be practical.
