British Science Week!
This week, we celebrated all things Science from Nursery to Year 6!
It's British Science Week! At St George's we celebrated in style again with paired year groups investigating a range of science together. This year's theme is 'Time' and this was covered in a variety of scientific ways:
In Nursery and Reception, we worked on time as 'seasons'. We used a non-fiction text about spring; monitored the environment for signs of spring; and produced observational drawings of spring flowers, planted seeds etc.
In Years 1 and 2, the first experiment we completed was to see how quickly skittles dissolved in water and timed this. For the variable, they compared how quickly the skittle dissolved in warm water compared to cold water to see the difference. This experiment showed that water molecules are more active in warm water than in cold water and as they come in contact with the sugar in the skittles they cause it to dissolve faster.
In Years 3 and 4, we had a marvellous time making two different time measuring devices: a water clock and a weighted pendulum. This allowed us to explore two different aspects of time: how to measure duration and the effect of gravity and resistance.
We discussed how time is a unit of measurement for duration, investigated how pendulums are used in context and showed great curiosity, determination, teamwork and scientific enquiry skills!
In Years 5 and 6, we investigated the microscopic world of particle matter and pollution. We looked into how our lives are affected on a daily basis by pollution indoors and out. We learnt about the different types of pollution and also the different sizes of pollution. We did an investigation to see how our bodies are able to filter out some of the pollutants, but unfortunately, not all.
