St George's Science Week 2025!

St George’s Primary School Celebrates British Science Week!
Last week, St George’s Primary School was abuzz with excitement as students from all year groups came together to celebrate British Science Week! From exploring the wonders of nature to launching rockets and investigating dissolving substances, our young scientists had an unforgettable experience filled with discovery, creativity, and hands-on learning.
Kahlo and Nursery Class: Exploring the Natural World
Kahlo Class embraced the great outdoors with a series of engaging activities designed to spark curiosity about the natural world:
-
Planting & Growing: The children planted seeds and learned how to care for them. They are eagerly looking forward to watching their plants grow! 🌱🌿
-
Minibeast Hunt: Armed with magnifying glasses, our little explorers searched for insects in their natural habitats, discovering a variety of bugs along the way. 🐜🐞🕷️
-
Amazing Minibeasts: Students learnt about the incredible role of bees in pollination and the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. 🦋🌸
Year 1 & Year 2: Rocket Science & Dissolving Investigations
Year 1 and Year 2 joined forces for two thrilling experiments:
-
Rocket Launches: Students designed and built their own rockets, predicting how far they would fly. The excitement peaked as they tested their designs and watched their rockets soar across the playground! 🚀
-
Dissolving Detective Work: Young scientists explored how different types of sugar dissolve in water, making observations and discussing why some dissolved quicker than others. The enthusiasm for scientific discovery was truly inspiring!
Year 3 & Year 4: Wormeries & Animal Adaptations
Year 3 and 4 took on an environmental challenge by constructing a wormery, gaining hands-on experience with sustainability and soil health. In addition:
-
Designing Adaptable Animals: Students created their own animals adapted to survive in extreme environments such as deserts and oceans. From thick fur for heat insulation to streamlined bodies for swift underwater movement, their creativity shone through! 🦊🐠
Year 5 & Year 6: Classification, Dissolving Experiments, and Heart Dissections
The upper years delved deep into scientific exploration:
-
Animal Classification: Students used Venn diagrams to sort animals based on their adaptations, identifying similarities and differences in survival strategies. 🦁🐧
-
Dissolving Substances for Environmental Batteries: Inspired by the work of Johnson Matthey, students investigated the fastest dissolving solutions to enhance the efficiency of battery production.
-
Heart Dissections: Year 6 concluded their circulatory system studies with a hands-on heart dissection, gaining a fascinating insight into how this vital organ functions. ❤️🩺
A Week to Remember!
British Science Week at St George’s was a resounding success, filled with teamwork, enquiry, and a passion for learning. Well done to all our students for their enthusiasm and dedication—we can’t wait for more exciting science adventures in the future! 🌟🔬
