Saxon Settlements

Ever wondered how the Anglo-Saxons came to be in Britain? Year 4 will tell you how!

Our first history topic of the year is 'Britain's settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots'.

Our curriculum vision statement for history is:

Be inspired.

Be academic.

Be reasoned.

Tull Class have been academic this week, researching and learning all about the Pics and Scots.

We learnt about the Pics and the Scots - the Pics coming from Scotland and (confusingly) the Scots coming from Ireland.

We used maps to locate where they came from and discussed how they tried to invade Britain as the Romans had abandoned Britain.

As the Romans had abandoned Britain, Britain was left defenceless and became an easy target.

We discussed the key words of 'invade' and 'migrate' as then the Anglo-Saxons came over and fought off the Scots and Picts in return for money and land. Children used timelines to show what happened from when the Romans left to when the Anglo-Saxons arrived.

We used maps to show where the different tribes came from and where they settled in Britain.

After we learnt where they came from, we did a bit of acting out on how the Anglo-Saxons helped defend Britain.

Have a look at some of our learning.

We look forward to our next learning, where we will be looking at what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons.
