Rocking and rolling

Need a rock classifying? Let Sancho-Thunberg Class help!

In year 3, we have been looking at different rocks. This week we focused on two sedimentary rocks: chalk and limestone. We found that these rocks both contain calcium carbonate and they are relatively soft rocks.

At St George's, our curriculum vision statement for Science is:

Be academic.

Be curious.

Be practical.

In this lesson we were both academic and practical, getting hands-on with rocks and then classifying them like scientists.

We had a range of different rocks and had to decide whether they were limestone or chalk. We used a small drop of vinegar and lemon juice to see if the rock would react. If the rock created a fizz or frothing, carbon dioxide was present, meaning the sample would be either chalk or limestone.

Check out the photos below to see how we got on.
