Ready, 'Bready', Cook!

Year 4's D.T day, making bread and pizza!

On Thursday 17th October, Year 4 had a very exciting day as it was 'D.T day'! The day was split into 2 parts. The first was to make bread rolls and then the other was to make pizza.

To begin the day, we spoke about breads and foods which we find in the supermarkets. We discussed that lots of foods have preservatives in them, which keeps the foods edible for longer. However, too many preservatives can make some foods more unhealthy as they do not use fresh products. We discussed how we were going to be making fresh breads, which were made using fresh products.

During the day, we had every opportunity to live out the calls to action in our Desing Technology curriculum vision statement:

Be innovative.

Be hands-on.

Be diagnostic.

Bread Rolls

To start with, we made the bread rolls. We discussed yeast and how it is a living organism and when we add warm water, it helps dough rise as it turns carbohydrates into carbon dioxide.

To start with, we added the bread flour, salt, yeast and oil, then mixed the ingredients together.

Next, it was time to add the warm water and combine everything into a dough. It was time to get messy!

We then put the dough into bowls, covered them and let the yeast do its work.

Finally, we made them into bread rolls, baked them and finally ... the best part ... eating them.

Pizza

After lunch, it was time to make the pizzas. This time, we learnt about how to use yogurt to help make the dough and how to knead the dough to get the gluten in it working.

To begin with, we made the dough by mixing the ingredients together in a bowl. We then added small amounts of water to help combine everything and make the pizza base.

Once the dough was made, we kneaded it.

Once the dough was ready, we rolled it out to make the pizza base.

Once the base was ready, we added the tomato sauce and lots of cheese!

Then it was time to bake them and, once again, we had to make sure they tasted OK!

We look forward to our next D.T day, where we will be learning about mechanisms.
