Terrific Textile Eco-Bags!

Best Class have been designing and making eco-friendly lunch bags!

This week, Year 6 pupils explored textiles in a special D.T. day, investigating which fabric is ideal for creating a functional and hard-wearing lunch bag.

In lesson 1, pupils examined a variety of fabric swatches, using magnifying lenses to study their fibres and weave. They designed fair tests to check strength, elasticity, stretchability, and absorbency. Through these tests, they discovered that tightly woven fabrics, like denim and polyester, were the strongest and most durable.

Lesson 2 introduced the class to Levi Strauss, the inventor of denim jeans. Pupils examined the famous Levi’s logo, which features two horses pulling on a pair of jeans. This symbolises denim’s incredible strength and durability, proving why it’s a great choice for a long-lasting lunch bag. They learnt how to change the properties of cotton fabric by applying a thin coat of melted wax to the surface to make a wax food wrap. Pupils thought about how the cotton's new properties (can be folded, now holds its shape, is stronger, easier to wash) make it more suitable for storing food.

In lesson 3, pupils practised essential hand sewing techniques, including running stitch, backstitch, and blanket stitch. Using recycled denim, they followed step-by-step instructions to construct their own lunch bags. By cutting a jean leg and using its hem as the opening, they created a sturdy design. Pupils carefully sewed a flat base, ensuring their bag was strong enough to carry food safely.

Through this hands-on project, pupils learnt valuable textile skills while making a sustainable and durable lunch bag!
